Benji and the UTFO Concert

From the beginning of Sag Harbor, it is established that Benji is somewhat less ‘cool’ than the rest of his friends. He lacks knowledge about sneaker culture, he rides his beat-up bike, and he’s against the idea of BB gun fights. But Benji’s experience in “Breathing Tips of Great American Beatboxers,” when he successfully sneaks into the UTFO concert underage, changes his narrative as the less cool friend in the group. Throughout the chapter, Benji devises his plan to sneak into the concert, as NP and Bobby come up with their own. On paper, NP and Bobby appear much farther in the coming-of-age path than Benji does. They both have girlfriends, and Bobby even has his own car.

Even NP and Bobby’s scheme for getting into the concert outweighs Benji’s in terms of ‘coolness’. Benji simply plans to dress older, practicing saying “I paid money for this ticket” several times in the mirror in case he is questioned (Whitehead 237). On the other hand, NP uses his position at Jonni Waffle to bribe the UTFO bouncer for weeks, bragging to the others that “Marlon’s working that night…I already checked. I’m not worried” (237). NP continues to exude confidence when they arrive at the concert, telling his friends, “I’m going to get y’all in, I got the hookup. Except for you Benji. I don’t have that much of a hookup” (252).

When comparing Benji’s plan of trying to wear “preppie camouflage” to appear older, to NP’s hookup with Marlon the bouncer, it seems evident that Benji is the immature, less cool one in this situation. However, NP’s plan fails spectacularly, and he is the only one let in, barely at that, leaving Devon, Erica, and Bobby to fend for themselves, which eventually leads to the demise of both couples. However, when Benji approaches the bouncer, he is quickly let through with no problem, his plan having worked perfectly.

While NP and Bobby initially appear to be much farther along the coming-of-age path than Benji, Benji's plan is the only one that ultimately works smoothly. Being let into the UTFO concert, given that it only allows people older than 18, is a literal manifestation of “coming-of-age”. When Benji’s plan works successfully, despite typically being closer to the lower end of the social hierarchy, he finally gets a win, and has something to hold over the other boys.

  1. It is interesting to note that Benji doesn't necessarily "fool" the bouncer into actually believing that he is 18 years old. He's got those four or five hairs on his face, which realistically would not be enough to generate the illusion, and his "preppie camouflage" makes him look like a dork who dresses like an old guy, but again it doesn't necessarily make Benji look older. He walks up with NP, after hanging out by the car with NP and Bobby--to anyone paying attention he's just a kid who is dressed funny. The bouncer barely looks at him as he passes through the threshold. The idea, as I take it, is that his confidence and self-assurance wins the day--he never has to deliver his indignant "I paid good money" line that he's been rehearsing. He just keeps his head down, acts like he belongs, and makes it through. And he's willing not to look cool while out at this concert. There might be a lesson in that.
